| Borda Castell:
Surroundings |
|
The surroundings of
Borda Castell are
well known as a center for outdoor adventure sports. The Noguera
Pallaresa river is the backdrop for all sorts of white-water sports.
The national and other parks provide for hikers and mountainbikers
and in wintertime there are several ski stations to enjoy the snow to
the fullest. For those who like to take it slower there are
picturesque mountain villages and some nice small museums to stroll
through. You can browse through the boutiques in Sort or enjoy a
drink and some “tapas” on one of the many terraces.
For the kids
there is a nice playground made in the old riverbed. Below an extract
of all the Pallars has to offer.

Aïgues Tortes national park:
Less than an hours drive from our hotel / camping,
Aigues tortes
national park offers a spectacular landscape with more than 200
lakes, summits of more than 3000 meters, and a very divers wild- and
plantlife. Its full name is: Parc Nacional d'Aigüestortes i
Estany
de Sant Maurici. You can go hiking for several days from one lodge to
another (remember to make reservations in the high season) or you can
make a day trip. 4X4 taxis can take you into the park, or can pick
you up. You can enter the park three different ways in no more than
one and a half hours drive from Borda Castell, so that you can make
several trips and enjoy a different part of the park every time.

|
Rafting:
In a self-bailing inflatable raft you
descend the river with an experienced guide. Upstream from Sort is
the spectacular part with lots of class III rapids. Downstream is a
little quieter but makes up for that with its scenery. You navigate
the canyon “Congost de Collegats” with a facade of
which is said
that it was an inspiration for Antonio Gaudi's “Sagrada
Familia”
cathedral. Kids of 5 years and up can make a descent, depending on
the water level.

Kayaking:
Kayak aficionados get their money's
worth on the Noguera Pallaresa river. You can make a descent through
the many class III, and even two class IV rapids, ore you can go
playboating in one of the waves in Sort's slalom course.

|
Canyoning:
In the neighborhood of Borda Castell
there are several canyons of different difficulty. Descending you
have to find your way over and through rocks and every now and then
you have to jump a few meters into a pool of water below. When it is
to high to jump you abseil.

Skiing:
About an hour's drive from Borda
Castell you can find three ski stations. The biggest is
Baqueira-Beret, which houses the preferred slopes of the
Spanish royal family. Two
smaller stations, Espot en Porte Ainé, have joined forces
and
operate now under the name of Gran Pallars. A little further you find
the small station Tavscan, wich is the place to be if you like
powder. The slopes are unprepared which makes for some great
off-piste skiing.

|
Mountainbiking:
For
those who like to explore the mountains on two wheels, there are
several routes to choose from varying from easy to very difficult. A
well known route in and around Aiguestortes national park is the
"Pedals
de Foc"
(pedals of fire). With a distance of 220 kilometers and a accumulated
height difference of 5800 meters it's only for the real die hards.

Swimming:
No holiday is complete without a
refreshing dive. You can do this in the river, but due to the strong
currents this is only advisable for very strong swimmers. On our
terrain there is a stream where children can play and build dams. We
don't dispose of a swimming pool, but we do have an inflatable pool
to play in. Thirty minutes by car from our camping is the "Lago
de Montcortes" a natural
lake where the
swimming is great. Also thirty minutes away is the big reservoir
"Pantà de sant Antoni". The swimming there is good and you
can rent pedalos and small boats. A few hotels nearby let anyone use
their pool for a few euros.
